Several years ago, at the construction site of a modern house in Buckhead, an elderly woman walked up to Alan Cablik and said, âThis home is a disgrace.â
âIâm sorry to hear that,â replied Cablik, president of Cablik Enterprises, which has built hundreds of modern homes across metro Atlanta in the past 15 years. âBut this is my homeownerâs dream,â he continued. âAnd wouldnât it be sad if everything looked the same?â
Today that antimodern sentiment has practically vanished as the regionâs attitude toward unconventional architecture has finally begun to shift. Although Atlanta is stocked with ranch-style, midcentury modern homes , locally the modern trend experienced a long lull beginning in the 1980s. Home designer Jordache Avery remembers moving to Atlanta in 2004 and finding only one recent example of the streamlined homes he wanted to build.
A turning point came in 2007 with the launch of Modern Atlanta, or MA, a home tour that helped remove the antiseptic stigma associated with modern design. âUnless you get inside and see that it actually is livable, a lot of people just never think itâs something theyâd be interested in,â says MA cofounder Elayne DeLeo.
Even old ladies can come around. âAt the end of the project, by God, that lady came by and said, âYou know, Iâm really sorry I love this house,ââ says Cablik. âShe was really cool.â
