History Of Gated Residential Neighborhoods
Gated developments have a long and storied history going back to the Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages through the Renaissance, kings would routinely provide gated districts as shelter for their loyal supporters and family during times of siege and social disorder.
Castles with drawbridges, moats, and heavy gates were the original gated developments, and for hundreds of years they served their functions exceedingly well. Later on, gated neighborhoods emerged in the new world with forts. Soldiers, as well as most of the town’s people, were quartered within their gates. In the Spanish empire, these forts were referred to as presidios.
The city of Tucson is one of the longest known continuously inhabited places in North America. It grew from a presidio near today’s downtown. The first residential neighborhood, El Presidio, still stands today where the original gated fort stood in the 18th century.
