That kind of savings can make for sale by owner seem awfully attractive. The math comes easy: At the standard 6 percent, selling a $400,000 home on your own saves you $24,000 in commission. Even with a negotiated lower commission, you’d save thousands of dollars.
Changes in the real estate market make for sale by owner easier than ever these days, with options that are a little bit FSBO, a little bit traditional.
Years ago, if you wanted to sell your house solo, you’d put an ad in the classified section and a sign on your front lawn. To determine your asking price, you’d make the best guess you could. The internet has upended those dynamics completely.
Some of the most popular real estate websites put FSBO listings side by side with those from the tried-and-true Multiple Listing Service, and they provide ready comps from your neighborhood and an estimated price for your home too.
“I looked at Zillow and Redfin to see what other places sold for in the area, similar kinds of condos,” said 38-year-old pharmacist Jeff Thiel, who didn’t use a real estate agent in May when he sold the condo in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood that he and his wife had owned since 2007.

Mayor Explains His ‘grow Fort Madison’ Plan

Its time Fort Madison grew into the town it was meant to be.
That is what Mayor Matt Mohrfeld told Rotarians at their meeting Tuesday and he explained how hes going to make it happen.
Fort Madison has to grow back into the town it was designed to be, Small towns in Iowa are at a tipping point. They have to decide whether theyre going to wither up and die or they are going to grow.
That growth, Mohrfeld says, will be by adding 1,000 city residents in the next four years.
We have to create and maintain an environment where people can come to Fort Madison and prosper. We could go out and get 1,000 people tomorrow, lets face it. Ukraine might send us some right now, which probably would be okay.
But Mohrfeld says Fort Madison needs to attract the college graduates to come back home the professionals able to work anywhere from home retirees looking to return home or to a peaceful small town and skilled workers willing to relocate for jobs at existing local manufacturing plants.
To attract these folks, he says several areas need to be addressed.
First, where will these new residents live? Housing, Mohrfeld says, needs to be increased by 400 units.
He admits his goal of 1,000 new people, and 400 new housing units, is an aggressive one, but says it it doable with partnerships from organizations, businesses and state entities.
We dont have nice apartment/condo complexes. The rest of the world does, but we do not.
