Before we make that decision, the first question we ask our editorial board is does the candidate have a comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges that face the Rockaway community?
We also take into account the candidates support of public safety, true infrastructure issues, school choice, and the willingness to advocate for the small businesses community.
Is the candidate accessible? Will the candidate hire a staff that is responsive to local concerns?Will the candidate listen to its constituents when voting for legislative issues that will directly affect Rockaway?
Many of our readers concerns are based on how the Mayor, the city government, and its agencies have dealt with the peninsula over the years. The majority feel that the government has failed us, and want someone in place who can truly speak to the concerns of the people who live here.
Representing Rockaway requires a unique perspective, someone who has worked with the members of our community through good times, and bad. Someone that people feel will have their backs when the Mayor, the City Council, or some city agency supports a policy that hurts our bottom line.
That candidate is Joann Ariola.
We believe Joann will represent this community vigorously and effectively, fighting for the values that our readers and their families hold dear safe streets, good schools, and common-sense legislation that will benefit Rockaway for years to come.

“Not bad we have lights and stop signs and there’s not a lot of trucks so it’s good to travel And from here to my job in Oceanside ny is good “
“There is a dog park in the neighborhood. There are a lot of open spaces to walk and play with your dog. There are also near by animal clinics, hospitals, and animal grooming facilities.”
“The beach is okay and the parks are nice for the kids. It is not a good neighborhood. Crime rate is very high, constant shootings. People don’t pick up after their dogs, trash everywhere. “
“There are many parks and outdoor spaces. Iâm not saying theyâre nice but we have them and theyâre decently maintained. There is some violence and crime but thatâs expected. “
“I donât use public transportation, but the traffic can get really heavy at times. Youâre at least an hour away from everything. “

“Pitbulls run loose, people don’t pick up after their dogs and neighbors will fight with you for letting your dogs go on the sidewalk in front of their houses even though you pick up after your dogs.”
