How Do I Get Around St Thomas
Fly into Cyril E. King International Airport , located just a ten-minute drive from Charlotte Amalie. Once on the ground, opt for a taxi or rental car to get you the rest of the way to your destination. If you get a rental, take note that while St. Thomas is part of the United States, you drive on the left side of the road here. The islands public bus system, Vitran, makes stops across the island. Lawsuit Claims Human Trafficking Forced Labor In Hurricane Repair Program
Eight men allege they were victims of human trafficking and forced labor after they were recruited to perform hurricane home repairs on St. Thomas in 2019 on the promise of earning $2,200 weekly, but were never paid, suffered inhumane working conditions, and threats of death or bodily harm when they complained, according to a verified complaint filed in V.I. Superior Court.
The men, who live in Puerto Rico, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana, allege in their complaint that they worked 31 days straight repairing hurricane damaged roofs on St. Thomas in 93-plus degree heat, without food or bathroom facilities and sometimes water, and were never paid for their work before they were abruptly fired and forcibly evicted from accommodations arranged by their employers.
The plaintiffs are Benjamin Osorio, Jeremy Santos Ramirez, Norberto Rivera Frese, Luis Enrique Camacho Mattos, and Rafael Ernesto Pastrana Lugo, all of Puerto Rico, Abiel Osorio Cotto, a citizen of Puerto Rico residing in Pennsylvania, and David Paul Gautreaux and David Lambert of Louisiana.
Defendants in the case are TJ Sutton Enterprises LLC, doing business as TJ Sutton, LLC AECOM, Inc. AECOM Caribe, LLP Citadel Recovery Services, LLC Bluewater Construction, Inc., doing business as Bluewater Staffing Company Thomas J. Sutton Celestino A. White Sr., doing business as Celestino White Consulting and Management Firm and landlords Jane Doe and John Doe.

ST. THOMAS The long-discussed sale of the former Marriotts Frenchmans Reef and Morning Star Beach Resort is final with an affiliate of Fortress Investment Group acquiring the hurricane-damaged property for $35 million.
DiamondRock Hospitality Company, which acquired the property in June 2005 from Marriott for $350 million, announced the completion of the sale in its first quarter results on Thursday.
In addition to the cash consideration, DiamondRock maintains a participation right in the future profits of the hotel once certain return metrics are achieved.
According to DiamondRock, it received approximately $240 million in insurance proceeds after the 2017 hurricanes and the rebuild of the resort was less than 50% completed when construction was largely suspended in March 2020 as the COVID-19 epidemic exploded. Since the beginning of the year, DiamondRock says it only spent $2.5 million on the rebuild project.
Before stopping construction, DiamondRock had announced it planned to reopen the 478-room property as two separate hotels Frenchmans Reef Marriott Resort & Spa and Noni Beach, Autograph Collection.

Bmr Energy Rebuilds Hurricane Damaged St Thomas Solar Farm
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands—-Apr 8, 2021–
BMR Energy, a Virgin Group company and developer, owner, and operator of clean energy projects in the Caribbean and Latin America, announced today that it is starting construction of the 6.4-megawatt Donoe Solar farm in St. Thomas. The facility is expected to be completed and enter service in the fourth quarter of this year and will sell the power it generates to the Virgin Island Power and Water Authority under a newly negotiated 25-year Power Purchase Agreement.

St. Thomas Solar Farm
The facility will be constructed on the site of a former solar facility that experienced significant damage during the devastating 2017 hurricane season. BMR agreed to acquire the site of the original solar farm in 2019 and closed on that purchase in the summer of 2020. The new facility incorporates several design and construction features to increase the strength and resilience of the equipment to withstand future windstorms.
The Solar farm will include more than 14,000 photovoltaic modules and has been designed with strengthened racking, foundations and module connection systems to withstand wind speeds up to 180 mph.
This will be the second project BMR Energy will operate to provide electricity for the utility.

Properties Subject To Tax Auction Include Dhs Offices Which Are Delinquent In Rent
One of the owners facing auction for non-payment of property taxes to the Virgin Islands Government said the delinquency has been caused by a government agency that is behind in its rent payment, but the agency maintains its rent was current when the property taxes fell behind. It admits not making a payment yet this year.
Fast Foto, Inc. is one of more than 60 landowners that owe the V.I. Tax Office back taxes and its obligation is one of the largest, at $168,988. The property at 10 and 11 Estate Golden Rock is about three acres and holds 60,000 square feet of office space including the Department of Human Service the commissioners office, business, personnel and other departmental offices.
Roger Kainth said DHS owes $265,000 for rent for the first six months of this year. As soon as it is disbursed, he said, he will be able to pay off the delinquent taxes. DHS has been in arrears before but has usually paid promptly for the buildings it has rented since the 1990s, he said.
Kainth said he is working out a payment plan with the government for the three or four years he said he is behind but believes the taxes will be paid in full before the June 29 auction date.
Its not going to be a problem to get the payments in. Well work it out, Kainth told the Source.
Carol Burke, DHS public information officer, said the department paid more than $4.8 million in rent over the years while Fast Foto was falling behind in its tax obligations.
