De Jonghe Residence By Lloyd Wright Los Angeles
$2.495mEmbedded in a ridge in the Hollywood Hills, the De Jonge residence is a midcentury home with serious pedigree Frank Lloyd Wright Jr designed the pavilion-like property for Dutch actor Daniel De Jonghe in 1959 from stone, concrete, glass and wood. The 2,100-sq ft house is listed with Crosby Doe Associates and Architecture for Sale for $2.495 million, and has undergone a complete restoration by midcentury specialist John Powell in more recent years.
Keeping The Water Out
Midcentury modernism attempts to erase the boundary between indoors and out, so that a house blends into the landscape around it, like Philip Johnsons Glass House in New Canaan, Conn., built around the same time as the Weston pavilion. But nature is not always forgiving, and no homeowner wants the outside to come rushing in during a storm.
When people naïvely buy midcentury-modern houses, they dont realize that they come with all these inherent technical challenges, like a flat roof, Mr. Lichten said.
This particular flat roof needed some patchwork, but otherwise did not leak, although it had no gutters or downspouts to interrupt the designs clean lines instead, rainwater traveled through cutouts in the roof, down chain-link rain chains into the ground.
Without a raised foundation, the floor-to-ceiling glass came all the way down to the slab, increasing the risk that water could seep in if snow or ice built up over a long winter. So when the architects replaced the original glass doors, they set the new sills in a bed of silicone caulk on top of the foundation wall to keep water out.
There was just one major water problem: The house was built against a rocky hill, so rainwater traveled down the rocks and around the back. A previous owner had built a trench along the base of the hill to redirect water. But after the contractors removed the floor in the kitchen, which faced the hill, they discovered the fix hadnt worked.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonia House
Much of Frank Lloyd Wrights genius lay in his ability to be a fearless innovator. His idea of building decentralized, affordable communities in harmony with nature eventually led to his design of the Usonian house. There are a number of these houses throughout America, and Westchester Countys Pleasantville is home to an entire community called Usonia. Designed and planned by Wright in the late 1940s, the 47-plot site stands as a testament to his belief in organic community living. About sixty per cent of the property is forest and meadowland. Wrights love of the natural was present in all of his work, and he once said that nature is the only body of God we shall ever see.
Wright coined the name Usonia as a sort of acronym for United States of North America, a tribute to the American way of life and his desire to interpret it for the modern world. He designed large beautiful homes for some wealthy clients, but his fond dream was to allow Americas middle class families to have simple homes of great beauty and style that would offer them a connection to the natural world in their everyday lives.
Ironically, Wrights fame and lasting style and the high cost of housing in Westchester have increased the value of these homes to a level that makes them unattainable for the middle-class buyer. However, his impact on the American mid-century influenced the development of open-flow ranch style homes and even of the attractive pre-fabricated homes marketed today.

Mid-Century Modern is an architectural, interior, product, and graphic design aesthetic that is characterized by simplicity, openness, and sensitivity to site and nature. Its origins are traced directly from the celebrated German Bauhaus School.
Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius began his ascent to leadership in the modern movement with his 1911 design for a shoe factory. Gropius designed the building on a steel skeleton and included an unusual quantity of glass, creating an open, airy feeling. That innovative design brought him the commissions he needed, and his success was a major factor in the rise of avant-garde Modernist ideals.
Gropius believed creativity could be applied in any area and parlayed his success as an architect into commissions to design everything from furniture to a sleeping car for the German railway, and even a diesel locomotive. The arc of Mid-Century design eventually encompassed the fields of fine art, furniture, lighting, ceramics, advertising, automobiles, and clothing.The Bauhaus led the modern movement in Europe and then transplanted its roots in the New World when the school was closed down by the Nazi regime . Gropius brought his genius to America, as did his protégé, Marcel Breuer.

The Jm Roberts Residence By Richard Neutra In Los Angeles
$1.795mModernist maestro Richard Neutra designed the JM Roberts Residence in 1955, but the four-bedroom property fell into serious disrepair over the decades. In 2014, it underwent an extensive two-year-long restoration, which took the West Covina property back to near-original state. It has lofty, beamed ceilings, terrazzo and cork flooring and a fossilized stone double fireplace. The mid-century home is co-listed by Ilana Gafni of Crosby Doe Associates and Nate Cole of Unique California Properties for $1.795m.

Moby Lists Westchester Midcentury Stunner For $13m With A Promise To Donate Proceeds
Not only is Moby a singer/songwriter, DJ, photographer, vegan restauranteur, and animal rights activist, but he also has an eye for unique real estate. He formerly owned a whimsical replica castle in LA, and in March he dropped $1.24 million on a midcentury-modern stunner in Pound Ridge to be near his childhood home in Darien, Connecticut. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright-disciple David Henken in 1956, the Westchester home has jaw-dropping mahogany interiors, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the woods and a quaint garden, and a swimming pool. But after realizing that hes still spending most of his time on the west coast, he re-listed the property for $1.3 million, according to Curbed. The Edris House In Palm Springs California
$4.2mPalm Springs is a gold mine of midcentury homes and the Edris House, designed by E Stewart Williams in 1954, is one of its most beloved historic landmarks. Its kind of like living with a movie star, says its current owner, JR Roberts. The stone clad single-storey dwelling has a gently sloping roof and floor-to-ceiling windows across the back which look over the Coachella Valley. Roberts, with consultation from Williams, restored the property to its original layout and details in 2000 based on photographs by Julius Shulman taken when Edris House was first complete. Its now listed for sale via TTK Represents for $4.2m.

Eichler Homes In New York
In 1962 Joseph Eichler took his vision for modern living to the East Coast where he purchased 140 acres of land in Rockland County, New York. His intent was to create a 216-home subdivision of Eichler homes, much as he had done in California. Although the project was not profitable and Eichler withdrew after building only three homes, what he left behind were the only Eichler homes ever constructed outside of California.
The three New York Eichlers are located in the small village of Chestnut Ridge, about 45 minutes from New York City and were designed by architects Claude Oakland and Jones & Emmons. Two have atriums a floor plan that had proved to be popular in California and the third is a courtyard model. All have the flat roofs, patios and indoor/outdoor spaces that are connected by large expanses of glass. Today, the Eichlers of New York are still there, situated on wooded lots and surrounded by other, slightly more conventional, Mid-Century homes.
All but three of the approximately 11,000 homes that Joseph Eichler built over the course of his career as a real estate developer were in California. These three out of state New York Eichlers remain as special and unique today as they were more than five decades ago when they were first built.
